Michael A. Johnston
Michael was born and raised in Nanaimo. After spending a couple of years at what is now Vancouver Island University and working as a commercial fishing deckhand in the summers, he joined his father’s accounting firm and enrolled in the Certified General Accountants program. In 2003, Michael obtained his Certified General Accountants designation and became a partner of Johnston, Johnston & Associates Ltd. in 2005.
In his over eighteen years of work experience, Michael has gained expertise in a broad range of engagements, including setting up new corporations, reorganizing large corporate groups, and providing trust audit services. He works closely with some of our large corporate groups, helping them grow and transition from one generation to the next. He also enjoys working with clients who are just starting out.
Michael has experience in working with charitable and not-for-profit groups and enjoys helping these groups with their year-end work, as well as helping them to increase their accounting efficiencies.
During the winter months, when not in the office, Michael enjoys spending time at the hockey rink, where he not only plays himself, but also coaches both of his boys’ hockey teams. Michael also enjoys spending time with his wife and kids hiking and biking the local trails in the spring and summer months.
While Michael retired from public practice on June 30, 2019, he remains in contact with the firm and works closely with the remaining partners to maintain quality of service provided to all clients.
